Career

From Belo Horizonte to Manchester, via Ukraine. Fred’s football journey so far…

The Beginning - becoming a footballer in Brazil

Fred’s youth career began in 2003 in Belo Horizonte where he played for Atlético Mineiro. He played for the club nicknamed ‘Galo’ (literally ‘rooster’) until 2009 and then moved to Porto Alegre, the club currently owned by the brother of Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho Gaucho.

In 2011, Fred made his senior debut as a professional footballer playing for Internacional. During his two seasons there he won the Campeonato Gaúcho twice.

Porto Alegre + 12,500 km = Shakhtar Donetsk

In 2013, Fred left Internacional to play football in Ukraine, signing for Shakhtar Donetsk. On his debut in the Ukrainian Super Cup, he scored two goals, helping his team to a 3-1 victory against Chornomorets Odesa. In 2018, Fred scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League in the Round of 16 first leg against AS Roma of Italy, again contributing to a Shakhtar victory.

During his time in the Ukraine, Fred won eleven trophies – four Ukrainian Premier Leagues, three Ukrainian Cups and four Ukrainian Super Cups.

Manchester United - the biggest club in the world

In June 2018, Manchester United reached an agreement to sign Fred. He agreed to a five-year contract with option to extend for a further year.

His debut for the Red Devils was in the first game of the 2018-19 season on August 10th in a 2-1 victory over Leicester City. His first Premier League goal for Manchester United came a month later on September 22nd when he scored in a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The ultimate for every Brazilian - Seleção

Due to an injury to Luis Gustavo, Fred was called up to the Seleção, the Brazil national team, for the 2015 Copa America in Chile. He started the first two Group C games against Peru (2-1) and Colombia (0-1).

In May 2018, he was named in Tite’s final 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
